I like to get to know who people truly are and how they actually think. In a polarizing world, I think it’s important to acknowledge that there are more than two sides to any issue. I want to know your perspective.
My Perspective on Labels
Perhaps it’s because I’m a millennial, but I personally find that labels don’t provide much information on a person’s ideology. At a surface level, I get a very basic idea as to what someone believes. However, when I look closer, I don’t know the nuances of a person’s beliefs based on that label. I don’t know what information or experiences someone is basing their opinions on. Most importantly to me, I don’t know their thought process.
While polls may lead us to believe that the label is what is most important, human beings interact with one another as complex individuals, not simplified populations. As such, I often find someone’s reasons for what they believe in to be more important than the belief itself.
Diversity of Thought
We’re told by a variety of media outlets and social media algorithms that one position is clearly better than another. If I browse long enough, I will find that these outlets typically conflict with one another. While truth is objective, opinions are relative. In that context, I think it is genuinely important to acknowledge that there isn’t always a moral high ground on every issue. Sometimes people just disagree. Not only is that okay, it’s a good thing. It’s part of what makes us human.
The purpose of A Single Perspective is to provide the viewpoint of just one individual at a time. It’s not about representing a particular political party or organization with special interests. I’m not here to promote a particular agenda. It’s not about boosting people who hold one set of views while putting others down. I’m looking to take one topic at a time and one person at a time. I see tremendous value in engaging in civil and productive discussion.
I’m excited to share my perspective, but even more so, I look forward to hearing yours.
